Alpha Nutrition formulas can be mixed with water or juices with a spoon, shaker or blender. A blender mixes the formulas quickly and completely. and reduces the tendency for some of the less soluble nutrients to settle. An alternative is to mix the formulas with water or juice in a sealed container which you can shake by hand. The best way to mix the formulas is with fruit or vegetables juices in a blender All the measurement instructions are based on gram weight measurements. The only way to accurately measure the formula servings is with a gram scale. Fortunately, this is seldom necessary. You can use standard kitchen measuring cups to approximate the gram servings. Conversions from weight to volume are never very accurate so you don't have to worry about being precise. For example, a 50 gram serving of Alpha ENF or Alpha PMX is somewhere between 1/3 cup and 1/2 cup. Use a plastic measuring "scoop" If the scoop is rated at 1/3 cup, use a heaping serving of the formula. If the measuring scoop is 1/2 cup a flat serving, a little under the mark will achieve about the same formula weight. Alpha DMX is more dense. A teaspoon volume can weight anywhere from 4-8 grams depending on the shape of the spoon and how full it is. You can approximate a 10 gram serving with 2 teaspoons. You cannot have too much DMX, so if you are in doubt about the quantity, add another teaspoon. The density of the formulas varies with temperature and time. When we package the formulas, they are at the lowest density; i.e. they are fluffy. Over time the formulas settle in the jar and become more dense ( heavier). Both Alpha ENF and PMX fill the jar when they are packaged and both will settle. PMX settle the most and after a few months on the shelf the jar will appear to be about 80% full because of settling. Adding vegetable oil to PMX. When PMX is used a complete food replacement ( no other fat in the diet) vegetable oil is added to complete the nutrient set. The type and amount of oil added is discretionary. Again weight to volume conversions are not very accurate. The minimum required is 1 teaspoon of safflower oil per 100 grams of formula ( about 5-8 grams). To increase caloric intake, more oil can be added. The use of a blender is necessary to emulsify large quantities of oil in the formula mix. See tube feeding instructions on increased lipid content. If fat is available in the diet and PMX is used for supplementary nutrition, no vegetable oil is required.
