Food allergy probably accounts for much eczema.  Atherton  recommended that eczema treatment begin with a low-allergy diet; a simple set of foods that have low allergy risk. This approach is taken in the Alpha Nutrition Program.

The Solution -Alpha Nutrition Diet Revision

Complete diet revision is essential to solve the problems of eczema, and chronic urticaria since many food antigens and food borne chemicals may be involved. There is no reliable test to identify them. In severe eczema, remission of the disease may be achieved by taking a  10 day food holiday on  Alpha ENF.

  • To solve a severe case of eczema, consider doing the slow track on the Alpha Nutrition Program with the option of supportive medication for the first few weeks of recovery - antihistamines and optional prednisone if the problem is bad enough.

  • A proper evaluation of the role of food as the antigen source usually requires starting with a 10 to 14 day food holiday on an elemental nutrient formula.

  • If the eczema triggers were in the food supply, the skin inflammation should diminish and then disappear.

  • Slow food reintroduction is then required to screen returning foods for allergic activity.

We recommend the slow track for all serious skin disorders. This means that you should plan a food holiday for at least 10 days and follow the rules in  Phase 1 of the program exactly. You are trying to establish improvement quickly - at least within the first two weeks. You should not expect complete remission of symptoms but you should be convinced that there is benefit. You need to have the patience as you reintroduce foods slowly and carefully.

Children: The Decision to do Diet Revision

The decision to modify the child's diet is made when the eczema is moderate to severe, especially when there are other problems suggesting food allergy. Allergy skin tests are not always helpful in identifying the trigger allergens. With milder eczema and strongly positive skin tests to specific foods, single food elimination may be successful in controlling the eczema.

With more severe, prolonged or complicated eczema,  skin tests are never adequate to determine a new diet for the child and complete diet revision must be carried out. Follow Alpha Nutrition. Often, a retreat to phase 1 foods is adequate to improve the skin condition, although 2 to 3 weeks is required for healing to occur.

We have encountered children with extreme food sensitivity who do well only on a few foods and have used Alpha ENF to replace some of the missing foods and to supplement nutrient intake for several weeks to several months. Parents need to be very patient and determined to solve a severe eczema problem. The afflicted child suffers a great deal and may be irritable, hyperactive at times and emotionally unstable.

Eczema sometimes marks the child with food allergy who will go on to have learning problems at school because of hyperactivity and attention deficits. We see this as a packaged deal and treat the child compassionately with careful food and environmental control. See Alpha Nutrition advice for parents and Learning Problems.

Preparing to Do the Alpha Nutrition Program

You should start the project with a period of preparation. You have to study the manual, purchase and try Alpha ENF, and discuss the changes you plan to make with family and friends. We recommend 2  weeks of preparation and rehearsal for this change.  Consider ordering the Alpha Nutrition Starter Pack with the supplemental text on skin disorders. You will receive the program manual and a 500 Gram bottle of Alpha ENF, try it, get used to the formula and then decide if and when you are ready for a food holiday.
