Send Copies and Please Pay

Our eBooks are easy to send as file attachments. We encourage you to send copies of our eBooks to others. Stephen King started the eBook honor system and we are following his lead.

We do expect either the sender or recipient of a copy to pay us. You just go to our online store, click on eBook Copies and  check the "pay for copy: button" and submit credit card and contact information. There are benefits when you pay for copies. We stay in business and make more and better eBooks.

Our electronic publications are sent out in Microsoft Reader Format. All Publications are copyright by Environmed Research Inc and we reserve full rights to all copying and distribution in any and all media.

The arguments in favor of paying for copies.

An eBook is an electronic copy of  an intellectual property and represents the dedicated application of intelligent research, writing, editing, formatting, and proofreading. The cost of eBook publication, as in the world of print, extends to office space, computers, software, training, communications costs, web server costs, heat, lights, telephones. In short, the infrastructure required to produce good eBooks is expensive and if readers do not pay for eBooks, the publishers will go out of business.

eBooks are less expensive to make and distribute than printed books, so that e books can cost less. eBook publishers can afford to be more generous, by offering, for example, discounts on multiple copies of any eBook distributed by schools and other institutions.

Distribute Copies and Pay by Honor System

Our policy is to encourage the distribution of eBook copies. Our information is valuable is is hard to obtain elsewhere. We would like everyone to know what we know. We think it is natural and desirable for readers of our eBooks to share the information with family, friends and co-workers.

When you send a copy as a gift, go to online store and pay for the copy or copies. If the copy is not a gift, please suggest to the recipient  that he or she go to online store and pay for the copy or copies.  If you distribute multiple copies, we offer generous discounts to schools, companies, HMOs, clinics and anyone who is using our eBooks in patient care and health education.

Q: How is the Association of American Publishers combating piracy in the ePublishing industry?

A: With the support of Microsoft Corp., the AAP's ePublishing anti-piracy efforts center around the three "E's" of any effective anti-piracy program: education, encryption and enforcement. The first "E," education, is a broad-based effort to educate the public on the inherent value of eBooks and other copyrighted materials and on the importance of copyright protection. Educating consumers also includes guidance on how to purchase and enjoy eBooks legally. The second "E," encryption, includes digital rights management technologies that integrate security seamlessly into every aspect of the eBook buying and reading experience. Finally, the company's enforcement against piracy includes effective, ongoing industry-wide efforts to monitor the Internet, identify copyright violations, pursue violators and work with law enforcement agencies as appropriate.

Q: What can publishers, authors and distributors do to protect themselves against piracy?

A: Publishers and authors need to work together to educate consumers on the value of buying and distributing eBooks legally. Distributors of electronic content need to adopt digital rights management solutions that do not interfere with the process of buying or enjoying a legally obtained eBook. They should also provide clear steps and guidelines for consumers on how they can enjoy digital content legally. It is imperative as part of any such system to make sure that guidelines are clearly set forth on the content itself. This "copyright management information" is protected under federal copyright statutes and provides clear guidance to consumers, authors and publishers to facilitate legal distribution of the works.

Q: What's wrong with getting a free eBook now and then?

A: As expressive content, eBooks often contain intellectual property that is protected by copyright statutes. A copyright is an exclusive right conferred on the creator of a work to exclude others from reproducing it, adapting it, distributing it to the public, performing it in public or displaying it in public. The protection of these works through copyright is imperative to encourage authors to continue to create valuable content and innovative expression. If that content and innovation are not protected, eventually they won't exist. If the value that's placed on this content is removed, then no one is going to produce it anymore.

Intangible property such as patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets are known collectively as intellectual property. Intellectual property is an asset, and it can be bought, sold, licensed, exchanged or given away like any other form of property. The intellectual property owner also has the right to prevent the unauthorized use or sale of the property. If intellectual property rights aren't protected online, then publishers and authors and other intellectual property owners will be reluctant or unwilling to post their content online.

It takes a lot of time and energy to create electronic content; when a product is copied, the creators of that work are not going to be paid for it. Stealing online content is just as harmful as stealing from a neighborhood bookstore or magazine stand. Additionally, piracy undermines the value and integrity of electronic content, diminishes the potential economic opportunities created by the ePublishing industry, and puts consumers at risk. It places consumers at risk because they don't know what they are getting or how the content may have been altered through the unauthorized distribution. -

Q: What should users do if they suspect they've obtained pirated online content?

A: Consumers should contact the publisher or author directly if they suspect they've obtained pirated content. The AAP asks citizens to report to them any sightings of copyright piracy. A reporting form is available online and can be filled out and submitted or printed and faxed to the AAP offices. For a copy of the Piracy Reporting Form, go to the AAP Web site at www.publishers.org. If the suspect material relates to Microsoft content, the Microsoft® Reader software or the digital rights management system associated with Microsoft Reader, please contact the Microsoft anti-piracy hot line toll free at 1-800-RULEGIT or send e-mail to piracy@microsoft.com.
